so, i've been working on inri038 this afternoon and i want to get some thoughts down.
what have i got for this already? 6 mixes.
1 -- album mix (reconstructed, 2014)
2 -- original vocal mix (2000, after hard drive crash)
3 -- minimal mix (2004 reconstriction)
4 -- base mix (2000, before hard drive crash)
5 -- electronics only mix (2015 reconstruction)
6 -- stress (2001 electric folk version - total rerecording)
i was initially going to take the vocals and past them over (1). but, that doesn't make sense for a couple of reasons. the first is that i actually moved the parts around a little. in the initial mix, the vocals come in after a short guitar solo; the 2014 reconstruction, which is now the album mix, pushes that guitar solo forward by 8 bars, so that they come in at the same time. on top of that, the guitar solo is then reversed and played backwards for 8 more bars. i did this to fill the space, cognizant of a lack of vocals. it would be kind of crazy to put the vocals back in.
further, why am i doing this? the reason is so that i can put the mix on the vocal prog comp. the other three tracks on this comp were remastered, but not remixed.; i didn't have source material. it would be weird for me to completely remix this, in context; i should restrict myself to the same kind of sourceless remaster.
so, i'm going to be adding a "single mix" to the front, based on the original vocal mix. but, then the thing is 5 minutes too long to fit on a disc.
i double checked, and i don't have extra remixes - maybe from failed remasters. they're not there. so, i'm going to have to leave a track as download only.
i'm currently leaning towards the original vocal mix, buti'll need to listen.
this should be done by the end of the night, and the remaining releases should not require any work.

so, i was absolutely mortified of george w. bush considerably before it was cool.
clinton had some problems, and gore was, at the time, a cartoon character; if you want to blame it on something other than the rain (and the moon and the stars), you should blame it on low turnout - something that was largely probably spurred on by the assumption that bush couldn't possibly actually win. well, maybe it was a fitting way to end the 90s. here's your apathy, kids. served cold. ice cold. cold as the blood of a shape-shifting lizard person...and cold as the blood on it's hands.
of course, standing in the spring of 2000, i had no way of knowing what was about to be unleashed. i was mostly still just pissed at clinton for bombing medicine factories in the sudan. i mean, the level of assholery underlying it was just.....the threat of "terrorism" could hardly justify that kind of indiscriminate bombing....fucking medicine factories...
the way i interpreted it was something more along the lines of this half-evolved hominid of undisclosed type slowly riding into town on horseback (with cronies in tow, including one with a yellow hat). it felt like you could see him coming days in the distance. it was unclear what was going to happen when he got to town, but it felt ominous. there was nothing to do but just wait, maybe prepare a little and ultimately hope for the best, even while bracing for the worst.
so, i did what i do - i wrote a conceptual piece about it with the intent of raising awareness. even just amongst friends would help, if they'd talk. etc.
...or, well, i sort of did, anyways. see, i lost a hard drive around this period, and most of the song along with it. what is posted here is a 90% done version that i thought i had lost completely but stumbled upon a few months after the election, after i had moved. given the circumstances, i'm lucky that i found this at all. however, it's remained unreleased as a cohesive piece all of these years.
well, the election was over. it was no longer worthwhile to finish it. i suppose that if i was operating on a profit motive, or a desire for control, i would have finished it. instead, i just felt like i failed to warn people, and it actually put me into a pretty deep depression for a while. it was too late, i blew it, we're fucking doomed....finishing it wouldn't matter....nothing mattered anymore...
listening to it now, it could maybe use a bass part. all this was really missing, though, were the vocals - which were also lost on the hard drive. i have no recollection of them at all at this point and don't see the value in making new ones up.
i did have the first and second section put aside somewhere, on a cd-r. i was able to fill that up with samples and get it out just before the election, and it also ended up sequenced into deny everything. so, it wasn't a total loss.
as for this suite, though? i present it as i've recovered it, with no further comment than that it accurately represents the deep, foreboding fear of the future that was in the air around the period that bush was elected.
this is a song cycle.

track 1...
i can date this well, and report that this was the initial idea of the track. if you read the books (and i'd advise against reading these to your kids), there's actually a fairly graphic section at the beginning where george is captured from the jungle by the man with the yellow hat.
the man with the yellow hat really comes off as a dick.
anyways, that's what's going on here with this.
the cd-r i found has an early version of acidosis followed by this suite. over time, i began to interpret the jungle sounds as being more connected to acidosis than to this suite and this did end up there, in modified form, as 'life goes on' (jasonparent.bandcamp.com/track/life-goes-on). that being said, the version attached to acidosis was reconstructed from the initial samples because i lost this collage when my hard drive crashed...
the source files (along with the files for part 2) are dated to the end of april, which seems roughly right.
what i did was get a bunch of jungle sounds together and let sound raider mess with them. i then created a file in audiomulch that produced some exotic drum effects and adds in some unusual noises.
it's an atmospheric track in either context.

track 2...

musically, the track is a combination of an experiment with an idea. i should note that this suite together is maybe the first original track in the style that dominates my output over the next few years, even if it's incomplete (albeit hereby decreed complete). the idea was about creating "guitar symphonies" (and while i was aware of the work of oldfield and fripp, and of sonic youth and gybe!, branca was a black hole for me at the time) in a minimalist, electronic framework that most readily draws to mind the work of trent reznor. this is the first of many expressions and evolutions of that idea. the experiment was with a program called "leaf drums", which is a fairly basic drum machine except in it's ability to manipulate samples with effects in realtime (remember that this is the spring of 2000). once i had that loop running, i started playing some of the riffs i had put aside for the guitar symphony, mostly just to play around with them. it stuck far better than i expected....and that's really the extent of the track.
the bush sample at the beginning is a constructed loop rather than a direct quote. he was talking about gore - "this guy would say anything to get elected, i'd...". that was flipped around to "i'd say anything to get elected" and looped. well, at this point i don't think anybody is going to stand up for bush' honesty or credibility. regardless, the way i looped it purposefully pans it to make it obvious that it's not a direct quote.
the lost version was built up considerably further than this; this version has three guitar parts, the lost version had closer to ten. i was too focused on getting the samples together to worry about re-recording the guitar parts. i don't remember them at this point and will not make up new ones. to be honest, this is far easier to listen to, and, while i mourn the loss of the completed version, i'm actually happy that i kept a more stripped down one.

track 3....
if i could find a source for the "people who are going to commit crimes shouldn't have guns" quote, i could maybe date this better. unfortunately, i suspect google has done some scrubbing for the bush family, which is a scary thought. i think it was early may, but it may be a little later.
i can't remember if i finished most of this, put it aside for later, recorded acidosis and then lost the hard drive OR if i finished the very beginning of this, recorded acidosis, then recorded the second half of this and then lost the drive. meaning, this is either early may or it's mid-september.
there's a number of reasons to lean towards may, though. the drums, firstly. there are not live drum parts in any of the material recorded from mid-may forwards. that indicates that they weren't available to play. second, i remember the early summer sun hitting me when recording the fourth part - and specifically in the hilliard basement, rather than the lexington basement i'd move to over the fall. there's a kind of nausea attached to the mid -season sun that only occurs in april/may and sept/oct.
musically, this extends out of the previous experiment, but it's easy to hear that that is an introduction to this, that this was meant to be the song that that leads into. as the big, ridiculous arena-rock tune it is? it holds up well. note that the aim was to push a message, and the arena rock theme wasn't an accident. this was supposed to be the take-away, the radio play, the thing that got stuck in your head.
i never added a bass track and don't see a point in doing so now. however, what is actually lost is really solely a heavily vocoded vocal track. i won't re-do it. i'll explain it a little. the theme underlying the curious george analogy was one of seeing bush as a corporate puppet. wherever george went, the man in the yellow hat would follow - to oversee, influence and ultimately dominate. i wasn't taking the analogy very far, i was simply drawing it with the aim of hoping that people would educate themselves about the dangers that he posed.

this is a collection of three tracks that were recorded in late '99 and early '00 with the intent of being included on record number three ('trinri') but were either discarded or stripped of samples on the way there. the purpose of this ep is not to be comprehensive, but to act as a transitional time capsule: this is the sound of exiting one project and entering another. as such, the narratives are scattered and better told separately.

track 2...
so, this is an interesting thing to have sitting on my shelf. it's the 'i have a dream' speech, orchestrated with some soaring guitars.
i should point out immediately that i got a lawsuit thrown at me by the king estate when i tried to upload this to mp3.com back in early '00. i thought that was really trite, but it's not really a legal battle i want to have. i would react more or less the same way should i be threatened a second time, except to point out this time that it's fair use so long as i remove the price tag and basically just do that.
the story behind the song is not very remarkable. the working title for the track was just 'progblues thing'. it was intended to be a structured instrumental guitar track that mixed the flair of hendrix with the minimalist structure of steve reich. the speech sort of came to it by accident.
it was also the result of my dad getting himself a drumkit for christmas that year, which my step-mother promptly placed in my bedroom as a disincentive for further use. score, i guess. but it didn't survive the move a few months later. in the mean time, i got some recordings out of it - as well as a few moderately crazy drunken weekend jam sessions.
i'll note that that christmas also produced a grand piano a few feet outside my door. it's intended recipient was my sister, but she wasn't around much. me? new pc, with a convenient recording interface, and some more functional microphones. despite talk of family jam spaces, one might suspect my father was actually conspiring in my favour. there is probably a great deal of truth in this suspicion. these conditions held for less than a year, but i made the most of them.
so, the idea of the track was initially about experimenting with the new reverb system built into my new soundcard interface, by triggering it with the drumkit that had recently magically appeared out of good fortune. it had been a few years since i'd played the kit much, and, unfortunately, it kind of does show. i had spent a little time practicing along with "nevermind" and "siamese dream" for a few weeks to get back in shape, but i wasn't really "there" yet at the time of this recording. i didn't want to program loops into the song, so i compensated by splicing the track up. of special interest in this wave editing is the backwards cymbals, and especially how they intersect with the soaring guitars.
and of those soaring guitars? a fairly simple blues pattern. sure is lovely, though, isn't it?
the speech became attached to the track when chance managed to have them playing simultaneously for me. i had cnn on in the corner. it was doing some kind of special on mlk, perhaps related to an anniversary that is related to a yearly holiday. placed together, it knocked me flat on my ass.
the idea in my mind from the start was integrationist, if not really consciously so. on the one hand, the guitar part is raw southern blues. on the other hand, the structure is sterile white minimalism. i didn't just realize this juxtaposition, i was trying to exploit it, even if the racial context hadn't occurred to me. when king's speech was played over it, though, the idea really exploded; the context became much deeper. it was an instant exponentiation in profundity.
i also thought it would work well as a foil to the doonesbury sample that is in the track that follows this one [entropy (original mix)].
in hindsight, there are some problems with this. i was a moderately wealthy white kid from canada. there was never much chance of me turning a profit on this, but if i did it would be a type of appropriation. this track does appear on the deny everything demo (jasonparent.bandcamp.com/track/a-commercial-break) but under the title of "a commercial break" - and without the dr. king samples. that's probably for the best.
that doesn't change the feeling i got when i first heard the two things together, or take away any of the power that the pairing produces.
i think this is worth sharing.
---
this was initially released as a download only ep. as of the fall of 2017, i have revisited this decision and reversed it: i need to have this release available in some capacity, and it follows that i'm being kind of silly in not offering the full range of options.
for example, if i were to offer the release as a download only, i'd have to offer it at $7, because it is original music, one way or the other. then, why wouldn't i offer it as a physical item? or, if i were to offer it as a $1 download and a normal physical offer, what am i doing besides punishing myself, really?
maybe i could say something about how it might have been better if i didn't create this, although i don't think that's really fair, either, as i do think it's worth sharing. but, i can't undo time. there's no "undo" button in reality. really. i've looked. strenuously.
i suppose that if i get sued i'll have to react, but i'm just going to treat this as any other release and carry on.
written and recorded in the winter of 1999/2000.

track 3...
this is an augmented experiment with a program called "sounder" that takes advantage of some obscure midi qualities to transport the act of triggering a note into the physical world. imagine a midi tennis ball that triggers at different intensities based on how hard the ball is thrown at a wall. now, imagine a frictionless space where that ball can bounce around indefinitely. sounder virtualizes this reality.
the experiment was augmented with synthesizer and guitar parts, and a sample of garry trudeau posing as a political candidate and being interviewed by larry king. i first interacted with that sample early in the morning in a deeply altered state and came to attach certain feelings to it that are difficult to describe. while it's clearly parody, it hit me as being frighteningly representative of reality. i suppose that all effective parody has this quality. perhaps my reaction speaks more of where i was at this point than anything else. i wasn't reacting well to the return of republicanism; i was very much dreading the future that i had no control in preventing. the absurd truth, here, cut me right down.
i was fucking baked.
eventually, i decided that the sample is just not worth listening to repeatedly and removed it from the track. an instrumental version is available on deny everything:

the hummer cover is here:

track 2...
so, this is an interesting thing to have sitting on my shelf. it's the 'i have a dream' speech, orchestrated with some soaring guitars.
i should point out immediately that i got a lawsuit thrown at me by the king estate when i tried to upload this to mp3.com back in early '00. i thought that was really trite, but it's not really a legal battle i want to have. i would react more or less the same way should i be threatened a second time, except to point out this time that it's fair use so long as i remove the price tag and basically just do that.
the story behind the song is not very remarkable. the working title for the track was just 'progblues thing'. it was intended to be a structured instrumental guitar track that mixed the flair of hendrix with the minimalist structure of steve reich. the speech sort of came to it by accident.
it was also the result of my dad getting himself a drumkit for christmas that year, which my step-mother promptly placed in my bedroom as a disincentive for further use. score, i guess. but it didn't survive the move a few months later. in the mean time, i got some recordings out of it - as well as a few moderately crazy drunken weekend jam sessions.
i'll note that that christmas also produced a grand piano a few feet outside my door. it's intended recipient was my sister, but she wasn't around much. me? new pc, with a convenient recording interface, and some more functional microphones. despite talk of family jam spaces, one might suspect my father was actually conspiring in my favour. there is probably a great deal of truth in this suspicion. these conditions held for less than a year, but i made the most of them.
so, the idea of the track was initially about experimenting with the new reverb system built into my new soundcard interface, by triggering it with the drumkit that had recently magically appeared out of good fortune. it had been a few years since i'd played the kit much, and, unfortunately, it kind of does show. i had spent a little time practicing along with "nevermind" and "siamese dream" for a few weeks to get back in shape, but i wasn't really "there" yet at the time of this recording. i didn't want to program loops into the song, so i compensated by splicing the track up. of special interest in this wave editing is the backwards cymbals, and especially how they intersect with the soaring guitars.
and of those soaring guitars? a fairly simple blues pattern. sure is lovely, though, isn't it?
the speech became attached to the track when chance managed to have them playing simultaneously for me. i had cnn on in the corner. it was doing some kind of special on mlk, perhaps related to an anniversary that is related to a yearly holiday. placed together, it knocked me flat on my ass.
the idea in my mind from the start was integrationist, if not really consciously so. on the one hand, the guitar part is raw southern blues. on the other hand, the structure is sterile white minimalism. i didn't just realize this juxtaposition, i was trying to exploit it, even if the racial context hadn't occurred to me. when king's speech was played over it, though, the idea really exploded; the context became much deeper. it was an instant exponentiation in profundity.
i also thought it would work well as a foil to the doonesbury sample that is in the track that follows this one [entropy (original mix)].
in hindsight, there are some problems with this. i was a moderately wealthy white kid from canada. there was never much chance of me turning a profit on this, but if i did it would be a type of appropriation. this track does appear on the deny everything demo (jasonparent.bandcamp.com/track/a-commercial-break) but under the title of "a commercial break" - and without the dr. king samples. that's probably for the best.
that doesn't change the feeling i got when i first heard the two things together, or take away any of the power that the pairing produces.
i think this is worth sharing.
---
this was initially released as a download only ep. as of the fall of 2017, i have revisited this decision and reversed it: i need to have this release available in some capacity, and it follows that i'm being kind of silly in not offering the full range of options.
for example, if i were to offer the release as a download only, i'd have to offer it at $7, because it is original music, one way or the other. then, why wouldn't i offer it as a physical item? or, if i were to offer it as a $1 download and a normal physical offer, what am i doing besides punishing myself, really?
maybe i could say something about how it might have been better if i didn't create this, although i don't think that's really fair, either, as i do think it's worth sharing. but, i can't undo time. there's no "undo" button in reality. really. i've looked. strenuously.
i suppose that if i get sued i'll have to react, but i'm just going to treat this as any other release and carry on.
written and recorded in the winter of 1999/2000.

track 3...
this is an augmented experiment with a program called "sounder" that takes advantage of some obscure midi qualities to transport the act of triggering a note into the physical world. imagine a midi tennis ball that triggers at different intensities based on how hard the ball is thrown at a wall. now, imagine a frictionless space where that ball can bounce around indefinitely. sounder virtualizes this reality.
the experiment was augmented with synthesizer and guitar parts, and a sample of garry trudeau posing as a political candidate and being interviewed by larry king. i first interacted with that sample early in the morning in a deeply altered state and came to attach certain feelings to it that are difficult to describe. while it's clearly parody, it hit me as being frighteningly representative of reality. i suppose that all effective parody has this quality. perhaps my reaction speaks more of where i was at this point than anything else. i wasn't reacting well to the return of republicanism; i was very much dreading the future that i had no control in preventing. the absurd truth, here, cut me right down.
i was fucking baked.
eventually, i decided that the sample is just not worth listening to repeatedly and removed it from the track. an instrumental version is available on deny everything:

written and recorded at the very end of 1999.

track 4...
this is the second half of the instrumental version of the hummer cover, presented as a hidden track.
the hummer cover is here:

i'm procrastinating; i don't want to make a choice about this.
i think the closest precedent i have is to inri003, the inrisampled disc. that was transitional, and a self-contained ep, but it was used in the upcoming lp.
one thing i'm deciding upon: this is not an ep single, but an ep. that gives me the freedom to avoid making it comprehensive.
let me list my options:
1) download $1 + no physical, like inri032.
- this isn't consistent, because there is original music on this disc. only the hidden track is truly a cover.
2) download $1 + regular physical. hybrid. unique.
- i liked this at first, but it's kind of a cop-out: i'm just punishing myself, really. it's sort of silly.
3) download only at $7, like inri022. this was the initial choice.
but, i i'm going to put it up as a download, why not manufacture it?
4) download & physical at normal price, like any other ep.
yeah. after all.
i'm not 100% comfortable with this.
and i'll finish my write-up carefully.
but i'll do it.....

this...
...i'm torn over what to do with this.
i understand why i shouldn't be selling it, but i also want the release inside of my physical discography. and the truth is that i'm not actually solving any problems if i put the thing up for download for the price of a physical disc, then don't offer it - i'm not actually addressing the problem i've posed for myself.
i have three releases that are cassette only. besides that, the only recordings i've left download only are inri022 (which is rejected tracks; this is not a really interesting release) and inri032 (which is a covers disc, and may be released some day - this is potentially temporary). these tracks were discarded, but they are not rejected in the same way that the ones on the rejected comp were. they were just remixed, actually.
i'm toying with the idea of flipping it around, and providing the download at a trivial price ($1) and offering the recording at a normal price. that would allow for the physical disc to exist in the collection, and yet allow for (almost) free downloads.
i need to nap. i'll work this out when i wake up.

on second thought, it seems as though i'll be staying in, tonight.
so, i should get some work done.
i still have to build a skeleton of the period 1 disc, but i've done a cursory run through period 2.1 and it doesn't seem like there's a lot to think about it. that pile of aleph discs has passed for a few releases: there won't be another mp3 disc until probably 2003, and 2000 is the lightest year, so i should get a ways into 2001 before i need to worry about another flac disc.
- i'm adding a hidden track to inri036 but don't plan to do any mastering.
- inri037 was left incomplete on purpose, and i'm going to have to ponder it, but don't plan to touch it.
- inri038 needs to be expanded - and i will probably remix the vocal part. i'll be adding 2-3 mixes. it's a different mentality; i'll go over this.
- inri039 is done.
- inri040 can be expanded to include missing tracks (same as 38)
- inri041 is done
there's going to be an extra vocal disc, probably at 42. this is a logical continuation of the process; i've taken three tracks off records (too cold, liquify, book it!) because they didn't fit, but they all fit together. the fourth track to add to this is the vocal mix of ignorance is bliss, which is now left off of deny everything. a fifth track may be a completed 'curious george suite'. the theme here is original vocal prog, and it works quite well, actually, and especially as an intermediary. i would want to sequence it after 'deny everything' and treat it as an unofficial record - lp010, but not an official 5th. that would just be revisionist. but, it seems somewhat essential, too. i split all of these singles off for good reason, but i like the idea of having an lp for each of them, and this is kind of a problem, right now.
i'm toying with doing the vocal 'stuck' after all, but it would need to look towards a vocal jazz comp.
i don't think that this should be very time consuming, but we'll have to see.
first, i need to skeleton period 1, and that should take me most of the rest of the day.

when i sat
down to make the ambient works, i wanted a "mix tape" style cd-r of
ambient fragments that ran from 1996-2003 as a volume 0. but, when i sat
down to actually make it, i ended up with a 90 minute actual mix tape
of material from 1996-1999. it actually split itself fairly cleanly into
an inri period release, so i've made space for it as a 1999 release.

i was not expecting to remaster book it, but i ran it through my custom patch and it just really came out of itself.
i'm going to have to check each thing as it comes up, but i actually don't expect to do a lot of remastering for the next slew of releases.
i need to sleep. but, i should get through quite a bit when i wake up...

republishing inri034
this is another lost track that exists in a sort of an ill-defined alter-reality.
it came out of a jam in my basement that fall. i was feeling a little more lonely than usual. see, i was quite literally the only person in my social group that bothered doing grade 13. so, school was converted from my only real social grounding (and i was always an extremely introverted loner) into a place of isolation and alienation. i skipped a lot of classes, actually, in a desire to escape the people. looking back, i sort of regret not reaching out to the people around me a bit more; it would have helped in more than just a social context. but, in hindsight, i'm also able to understand the separation better as one of class; as much as i regret keeping myself isolated, i think i would have been better off not carrying on with school at all.
i mean, i did well. my average was over 90. but i felt hopelessly out of place. i knew i didn't belong there....that they would never accept me unless i became the kind of pretentious jerk i despised. nor did i want anything to do with them, anyways. i really hated the superior attitude that i found myself immersed within. so, i just kept my physical distance and my mouth shut, hoping the condition was temporary (it wasn't).
the flip side of this is that i was also working a part-time job in a fast-food restaurant and i hated it just as much. i didn't fit in any better there, amongst the kids with no aspirations in life except to work in order to exist.
so, i found myself stuck between worlds, not wanting anything to do with either. in both cases, though, what i found the problem was was the people. "i don't mind the job, but i'm repulsed by the staff".
what i really wanted was just to be able to lock myself in a room and never have to engage with anybody ever again. i think that i'm the only person that could have written this. it exudes my idiosyncrasies in surreal, tongue-in-cheek humour. but it's also dead serious.
"i'd rather have a book than a friend.
it's loyalty will never end,
doesn't succumb to fashion or trend,
and all the information it sends,
will never get lost along the way.
when things get as tough as they may,
it will always know exactly what to say,
'cause books don't hurt...
...or do they?"
musically, there's some fancy playing here. everything is completely live: no loops (except the drums, programmed into a 909 emulator). that guitar part is sort of tricky. and check the bass part in the breakdown.
the thing i really like about this the most, though, is the gorgeous kosmische ending section, which is built up on overlapping sixths and is just the most dreamy thing to escape into ever. dramatic ending chord care/of a day in the life.
and, indeed, this is the dramatic ending chord for inri.

this was initially a part of this record:
jasonparent.bandcamp.com/album/inrimake
...but it never really made sense to put it there. that's a remix/cover album, and this is two forgotten experiments. it makes more sense to spin it off here.
this track was meant to be a new beginning, but, instead, exists in a sort of purgatory. musically, it's radically different than anything else labeled 'inri'; thematically, it's a logical extension of inri. i really wanted this to be a fresh start, but in the end i had to leave it in the inri pile. in places it's sort of evil, in other places it's just a little too precious.
my dad swapped houses in mid 99. again. this would be a frequent annoyance over the next few years. i can date this clearly to the summer of '99 as the first thing i did in my new basement. that change of surroundings contributed to the feeling of wanting to do something different...
while it is an original track, it ended up on the covers disc for two reasons. first, the lead guitar loop that cycles through the track came out of a stoner jam session in the basement of a friend of mine. it's sort of hilarious to realize it took three years for another human being to get an influence here, even if it was a throwaway jam session. that was really just an excuse though. the real reason it was on inrimake, rather than on inridiculous, is that it fits in better with the prog theme of that disc than the noise theme of the other one.
the lyrics have been a problem since they were recorded. sex sells. shock sells. i had to psyche myself up to do it. it's all tied together, though. where was i going with this, anyways?
'99 was the summer between grades 12 and 13 ("oac"). yes, ontario had a grade 13. get your laughs in. it was actually a pre-university year. universities would take the grades from the "oac" year as the entrance requirements. we didn't do SATs or anything. most universities have something like this for "mature students"; the weirdness is in making high school kids do the extra year. a few places (like quebec) still have similar types of pre-university screening...
anyways, i'm going into the oac year and i haven't even really given the whole vocation thing a passing thought, other than to reject the idea of defining my life through the concept of labour. there were a few weeks in the summer where i had sort of decided not to go to oac at all. i was actually *excited* about escaping school, focusing on a minimum wage job and spending my free time smoking pot and writing music. i really didn't want anything more out of life than this. and, if i happened to get lucky and sell some records, even better. i was eventually talked down from this position through a process of bribery. that didn't magically construct vocational aspirations, though; i ended up overloading on oac credits for the simple reason that i didn't know what i wanted.
(i ended up grudgingly accepting entrance into a software engineering program, literally switched to cosmological physics within a few weeks, switched to math after that, then bounced around from music to english to women's studies and ...)
so, again, i'm stuck between grade 12 and 13 and really dreading what the future holds. finding a way to sell some music would be an escape from this. i concluded that, tactically, my best approach at the time would have been to focus on something sexually explicit that gains it's power from it's shock value. there's a bit of desperation underlying this.
so i wrote a sort of graphic depiction of sexual domination within a male homosexual context. see, the thing is that it isn't very convincing. it isn't very convincing because it's contrived for profit. i'm being bluntly honest about the logic that produced this track because seeing myself in the mirror like this actually had a large effect on me. once i realized what i'd created, i was completely disgusted with myself. in it's initial form, liquify was the first 3:36 of this track. it sat on my hard drive for several weeks, waiting for me to finish questioning myself - who i was, what i was doing, whether it was worth it.
i came to two conclusions.
the first was that contrived music sucks. i realized i wasn't going to get anywhere faking it, anyways. if i wanted to build an audience, the only serious approach i had was honesty.
the second was that, even if it works, being fake isn't worth it. i was rejecting the beaten path because i didn't feel i belonged on it. accepting some kind of Official Alternative Beaten Path wasn't solving anything.
so, i should just do what i want, and tell anybody that doesn't like it to fuck off.
the second part of this track flowed from that epiphany. it's a pure prog workout, discernible from 1972 solely in it's updated use of technology. probably for the first time, the notes really mean something to me, here. if you listen, you can tell.
the ending scene of the jim carrey masterpiece, the truman show, fades the track out. it's meant to document the importance of the film in helping me work through what i was working through. as of january 2014, i've mildly modified the track to fade out the truman show ending, which was just a little too cheezy & precious.
so, yeah. there's a few more inri tracks. but this is really the point where inri dies.
--
the first five minutes were initially a different track, and are split off here for the final version to document it. i didn't initially commit to this pairing; i always intended to finish the first section as a separate track. it really wasn't until 2014 that i finally decided against it.
the version that ended up on 'inrimake' was a slightly less finished mix than the version that i archived as mp3. i must have further altered the track between the time that i burned the inrimake disc (october, 1999) and the time that i saved the track to mp3 to archive (january, 2000). i didn't notice this when i edited the track in 2014. but, i've brought the newest version in for the final remix.
--
when i ran through the discography in 2014, i stopped on this track for a few days and ultimately had to admit defeat around it. i wanted to turn the vocals down, but the mix was simply too saturated to do anything about it; everything i tried had a set of unintended consequences, and it just seemed prudent to not touch it. i was able to get around these concerns for my final mix, which is dated to sept, 2017. i've also split the instrumental section off and given it the title that i used for early versions of inricycled.

so, we talked last early on monday morning. i made some progress, but the heat was a bit of a problem due to the a/c upstairs (as mentioned, i'm waiting this guy out) and i ultimately had to stop due to interference. the same thing happened yesterday morning, but i think i was able to finish a proper mix this morning.
we're highly tentative around this. i'm going to need to spend the next 24+ hours verifying it.
but, the heat has also lifted, which means i'm pivoting to airing the apartment out and even plan to take a shower in the next 24 hours. i love the heat, but i can't overstate how much of a problem the a/c is. getting the a/c off should get me a bit more productive.
as i was waiting out the interference, i finished a lot of filing and typing, so there should be a quick procession through the end of 1999, as soon as i close inri031.
for now, i need to listen.

alright, so...
i am awake, now.
where did i leave off on friday morning? i had a tentative mix of liquify up. i'll need to check that. if it's done, i should get through the paper work around the end of 1999 pretty quick; that will include two more completed alephs and a punt on the period 1 disc. if not, i'll need to finish and move on. it won't be long, either way.
so, expect the next thing here to be a closing of inri031 and to be moving forward into the year 2000 within a day or two.

i split the track up, in the end. i had to. this is the most interesting part.
i'm exiting the inri period, with this. i call it 'period 1'. it ends about the end of 1999-ish. period 2 runs from 2000-2003.
where period 1 was about different types of industrial music - running the spectrum from total noise to fruity synth pop - period 2 is fundamentally a prog period, moving between ideas like fusion, post-rock and idm.
i need to run through this pretty quick to ship some material dated to the end of 2001, and moving into early 2003. this is really the way into it.

something
that happened in the late 90s, when fans of bands started getting
together and talking on the internet, was the phenomena of the
unauthorized remix. schemes were hatched all over the internet to create
remix records, tribute discs, fan collaborations and whatnot. in
hindsight, given what the internet turned into, it was actually a
refreshingly productive use of networking.
different artists have reacted in different ways. i got yelled at by the now deceased singer of god lives underwater for one of these. trent reznor, on the other hand, eventually went so far as to set up a competition (which i didn't take part in, as i'd moved beyond the idea by that point).
once i'd put a few remixes/recreations together, and received more positive feedback doing it than with any of my own songs, i began to realize that if i could get somebody's attention then i could construct myself a launching pad. it seems like that's what a lot of people were thinking; it didn't work out, but i did end up with a number of remixes.
unfortunately, i've lost a lot of them. about a third of them ended up on a cd-r i threw together at the end of 1999. a third just sat on my hard drive, and a third disappeared into the internet. i'm putting them all together here under the title of the 1999 release, 'inrimake'. the initial release ended after "the day inri messed the world up"; the last four songs are 'bonus tracks'. i've further split off the first two tracks to a standalone ep (jasonparent.bandcamp.com/album/liquify), partially because they never fit here properly and partially because it pares the augmented version down to under 80 minutes.
now, i should point out that i was very much going for the *abstract* remix sound rather than the club-friendly mix. you can't really dance to these. you're not supposed to. you're supposed to blare them through headphones and trip out into them.
in terms of my own work, this record very much extends a bridge from the inri period into the deny everything period, to the extent that it arguably realizes the goals of both phases better than either phase does.
this record may be released physically, one day, should the proper legal issues be resolved. right now, i'm only making it available as an almost-free download.

unfortunately, i've lost a lot of them. about a third of them ended up on a cd-r i threw together at the end of 1999. a third just sat on my hard drive, and a third disappeared into the internet. i'm putting them all together here under the title of the 1999 release, 'inrimake'. the initial release ended after "the day inri messed the world up"; the last four songs are 'bonus tracks'. i've further split off the first two tracks to a standalone ep (jasonparent.bandcamp.com/album/liquify), partially because they never fit here properly and partially because it pares the augmented version down to under 80 minutes.
now, i should point out that i was very much going for the *abstract* remix sound rather than the club-friendly mix. you can't really dance to these. you're not supposed to. you're supposed to blare them through headphones and trip out into them.
in terms of my own work, this record very much extends a bridge from the inri period into the deny everything period, to the extent that it arguably realizes the goals of both phases better than either phase does.
this record may be released physically, one day, should the proper legal issues be resolved. right now, i'm only making it available as an almost-free download.
recorded sporadically, and without cohesive intent, over '98 and '99. originally compiled in the fall of '99. augmented and minimally altered in january, 2014. lp006. as always, please use headphones - but note that they are especially mandatory for this recording.
this release will also eventually include a comprehensive package of journal entries from all phases of production (1998, 1999, 2013, 2014, 2017).

there's no affidavit on file. what that means is that there is no legal
evidence that they require me to move out of this unit - the form is
incomplete, and the case will be dismissed.
they could still provide an affidavit. they have until the trial date.
there's two explanations for this, that i can see:
1) incompetence. and, they've demonstrated more than enough of this to consider it plausible...except that they now have counsel, and this would be pretty pathetic if it's incompetence by the counsel. regardless, it could still be coming, and i'll need to call back every day and check to see about it.
2) they never intended this to go to trial - it was a tactic to try and scare me out. in other words, there's no affidavit because there's no family member to move in - it was a bluff, and i've called it.
i need to call every single day. i need to prepare a defence. but, as it stands, they don't have an actual case to present and i'm consequently not under a serious threat of eviction.
so, should i re-open the harassment case? this is my smoking gun, clear as day: an eviction notice without an affidavit is clear and obvious harassment.
1) except for the eviction notice, they've been leaving me alone for the last few weeks.
2) i don't want to present the appearance of lingering conflict - and i can be genuine in avoiding it. the bigger threat is the judge declaring the relationship dysfunctional.
3) i'll be in an even stronger position if i wait it out, as i'll be officially victimized twice and taken advantage of after acting in good faith, the third time. the fourth time will need to be bringing them to justice.
this is counter-intuitive. it's true that they didn't sign the mediation in good faith, but i did. and, so long as they aren't presenting a serious case, i'm better off letting this play out, as it just strengthens my hand.
if this blows over, great - although i'd suspect the judge will award me something as she dismisses the case. i still think they're listing the building soon, in which case i should lay low and wait. and, if they do something stupid, i'll have an easy case, given that i've been so accommodating.
this could change. i'll need to call daily. but, right now, i should wait.
bluff called. i think i'm ok...

except to split out the last track as a single, i've decided not to alter this in any way.
i was moving, conceptually, to more serious styles of music. i wanted to write these epic 20-minute trips that reached into every genre imaginable. you can hear that shift over the last few things i posted, and it really accelerates moving into the year 2000. there wasn't much left of 'inri' by the time i got there.
what i had left was a bunch of noise tracks that i'd been putting aside for a third demo, trinri, that was meant to carry on with the same concept as the first two: "songs" and "collages" would alternate over 19 tracks. the problem i ran up against with trinri was that i was no longer interested in writing songs. what was coming out, instead, were these fifteen minute journeys. that's ultimately the driving reason that i switched things up: the format had worn itself thin.
in an attempt to establish conceptual unity, i pulled the noise collages together (along with some older collages that i had pulled from various sources as far back as my first demo tape) into this thing. i became aware at some point, very suddenly, that the whole idea and product was sort of ridiculous. hence the title.
this recording is consequently void of actual songs. it isn't easy to listen to, and offers few reprieves, but if you're a fan of a specific kind of electronic psychedelia then you may find something of enjoyment here.
written and demoed in multiple stages from 1996-1999. initially constructed in this form in dec, 1999. slightly resequenced in jan, 2014. finalized on sept 19, 2017. this is my third official record; as always, please use headphones.
the last track just got tagged on as an afterthought. it never really fit the theme. so, i've removed it (as of january, 2014) and placed it here: jasonparent.bandcamp.com/album/book-it.
this release also includes a printable jewel case insert and will also eventually include a comprehensive package of journal entries from all phases of production (1999, 2013, 2014, 2017).

i meant to get inri033 printed off on tuesday night, and my first
package mailed wednesday morning, but my printer wasn't reading on
tuesday night (it turned out my services got turned off, somehow), so i
put it down to have a few beers at a local noise show - only to not get
home until 7:30. shit happens.
the thing is printed and ready to go. so, that's inr011 & inri033 shipping in the first package, within hours. the next will have what will be something like inri049 and inri057 in it - so i have a lot of liner notes to get through.
i skipped over 31 and 32 just to get the first package out. 32 is download only and will be a quick fix; 31 is going to apparently require a few days to approach. after that, it will just be liner notes for the next 20 or so releases; i'm over the hump, and into material i spent 2014 & 2015 on. it's daylight...
i'm going to have to mail that form this morning, too, as well as figure out how i track down the affidavit in the file.
i should get 32 done, but likely won't be back at 31 until i wake up next.
